Scrimshaw is a very ancient art form that is found in many cultures. Ivory was the common mediun for this art. Tusks, teeth and sometimes bone were used. Today, it is unlawful to harvest ivory because of the international ban on the use and sale of item from "new" ivory. So, only "pre ban" ivory can be used. All of which is VERY expensive!
